— Erik Spoels was in a Miami Heat dressing room Thursday night when a group of players gathered around him to talk about what they would do if the team was eliminated from the postseason.
There was no question they wanted to see Spoelstrap back, even if they were not sure whether the coach would be back in Miami next season.
“I don’t think that it would be in Erik’s best interest to be gone,” said forward Marreese Speights.
“It would be better for the organization, especially the players, to be around him and hopefully get the opportunity to work with him.
We had a really tough year last year, but we didn’t lose. “
You know, he’s helped me a lot.
We had a really tough year last year, but we didn’t lose.
We won the championship.
It was a great experience.
And I know that Erik has helped us so much.”
Spoel’s status is unclear.
Spoel was a key figure in the Heat’s title run in 2016-17, leading the team to the NBA Finals.
The Heat have not made the playoffs since.
Spoelt is under contract through the 2021-22 season, which means his job security is not guaranteed.
But his future with the Heat appears uncertain.
“The decision is Erik Spo, who I think has done a great job, is not here,” said Heat forward Josh McRoberts.
“And I think they’re going to try and figure that out and see what’s best for the players.”
Spoelt was not in the room when the group of 30 players met Thursday.
“We were just talking about what we want to see him do for us,” Speights said.
“He’s done a lot for us this year.
But we know we can go out there and win a championship. “
This was a really difficult year, and it’s one that we’re really disappointed about.
And Erik is one of them.” “
There are some players in the league that are just doing everything they can to get to the next level and do everything they’re asked to do.
And Erik is one of them.”
Speights and McRoberts both said Spoel is the most talented player on the roster.
“So much talent.
I mean, I know I’m biased, but Erik has done so many things that have helped us win championships.
And he’s one of the most successful coaches I’ve ever been around,” said Speights, who played for Spoel at Florida.
“Every year, he gives us the best opportunity to win.
I can’t imagine anybody that could say they have been able to get better, and so I think he’s done an incredible job.”
Spoels’ contract has not been renewed for next season, but he will be eligible to be paid through the 2022-23 season.
If he is not re-signed by the Heat, Speights believes Spoel would have to leave Miami.
“Obviously, he loves the city.
And obviously, he wants to stay here,” Speys said.
Speights was in the middle of a training camp with the New York Knicks when the news broke.
“They’re not the best team in the NBA.
But if you’re going in with a coach like Erik, I don’t know how you could be better,” Speames said.
The NBA has not confirmed Speights claim.
Spoels has coached at the University of Miami since 2005.
He is a former NBA player and an assistant coach at the school for three seasons.
“If you’re in Miami, you’re not going to like it,” Speight said.
